JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – “Deteriorating” road conditions brought on by a wintry blast Thursday morning left several vehicles in the ditch and motorists stranded.
Local law enforcement reported few problems early Thursday morning as snow and sleet moved into Northeast Arkansas. But, that soon changed as more sleet and snow fell across the area.
Trumann Police Chief Jonathan Redman said in a social media post at 6 a.m. road conditions were “deteriorating” as he drove into work.
A few hours later, the Arkansas Department of Transportation reported many of Northeast Arkansas’s roads and highways were covered with snow.
ArDOT also reported at least two crashes in Randolph and Clay Counties.
The Paragould Police Department reported “multiple crashes and cars in ditches” on State Highway 135 North between the city limits and the Unity Road intersection due to “treacherous” road conditions.
At 11 a.m., PPD reported traffic was backed up and at a standstill. They asked motorists to avoid the road if possible.
In Randolph County, at least two semi-trucks collided on U.S. Highway 67 northeast of Pocahontas near Engleberg Road.
Pocahontas Detective Rocky Jones told Region 8 News they expected it would take at least six hours before the road was cleared.

In Clay County, ArDOT reported an 18-wheeler ran off State Highway 135, about 2.6 miles east of Corning. According to IDriveArkansas, all lanes of traffic were affected. The department did not say if anyone was injured.
Along Interstate 55, multiple wrecks had traffic at a standstill near the Steele exit, according to Region 8 viewer Haley Mddleton.
